Learner’s Digest: January 2022
The pandemic has been a challenge and it’s never difficult to find someone for whom it’s been harder. We’ve all had to navigate our own unique challenges – professional and personal. For those of us whose professional responsibility – and joy – it is to design, develop and execute events, it’s been a bumpy ride. Year one was all about adapting and pivoting. I found it to be a huge, but ultimately very satisfying, learning journey. Year two came along and felt … a bit much. The learning curve was less pronounced, but the novelty had worn off. Most of us are now pretty effective at running virtual events and see their value and relevance. But we’re excited about putting some innovative energy back into live events.
As the Omicron wave has peaked and will hopefully decline over the coming weeks, the questions for 2022 are not “should we meet in person?” but “how do we run this event effectively and safely?” Planners are including new questions in RFPs and conversations with venues, peers and clients. “What type of air ventilation does this venue provide?” “What’s the venue’s vaccination policy?” “What safety measures are already in place and what additional costs will we be assuming?” “What are the emerging food service practices – are we still doing buffets?”
These are big questions that don’t likely have one-size-fits-all answers. But CSAE is excited to be asking them and to be working with our partners to get creative about what trade shows, conferences and workshops look like in 2022 and beyond. If you’re itching to meet in person again, you’ll find lots of exciting opportunities across the country listed below. From the Symposium for Chief Staff and Chief Elected Officers, to Tête à Tête, the Summer Summit and the annual conference, there are many opportunities to reconnect face-to-face. Our networks across the country are also in planning to bring local events back to a city near you.
And if you are still reluctant to return to in-person learning, fear not. CSAE hears you and will continue to deliver a variety of compelling offerings to a screen near you.
See you soon!
