• Learner’s Digest: December 2021

Continuous improvement – it’s a foundational component at the heart of the CAE® program. Students are encouraged to perpetually rethink and review their practices, programs and offerings in their association work. After all, what was effective yesterday is not certain to be the best approach tomorrow. Take 2020 and 2021, for example. We’ve all had to do some reimagining to deliver the value our members expect from their professional or trade association.

Over the years, there has been a lot of talk about the CAE® designation and how it measures up against other professional designations. While exploring the recommendations of organizations like the Institute for Credentialing Excellence and the International Organization for Standardization, the lack of an ongoing learning component was one clear omission for the CAE®.

In the fall of 2020, a task force was struck to examine whether a continuing professional development (CPD) component should be introduced and, if so, what such a requirement could look like. Comparable professional designations were reviewed and the task force explored how a CPD requirement could be made flexible, achievable and realistic while encouraging the kind of lifelong learning we know CAEs value.

Following this rigorous process, I’m pleased to introduce the CPD requirement for the CAE®.  It recognizes the value of sharing knowledge as well as volunteering and more formal professional development. You can learn more by visiting the FAQs here. We’ll be sharing more details in the coming months so that current CAEs are well equipped to meet the new requirement.

I welcome your thoughts and feedback. It’s a critical part of how CSAE moves forward with an eye to continuous improvement.

CSAE has a lot of opportunities coming up to help all association professionals build on their existing skills and knowledge – so get ready for a great year ahead!

    Happy holidays!
