• Setting the Tone: Leadership, Governance, and the Work That Matters Most

    By Tracy Folkes Hanson, CAE,
    President & CEO, CSAE

The start of a new year always brings a sense of possibility. But for CEOs and executive directors of associations and not-for-profits, it’s more than a calendar milestone. It’s a moment to set the tone for everything that follows.

Strong organizations don’t thrive by accident. They thrive because leadership is intentional, governance is disciplined, and priorities are crystal clear. And at the heart of it all is one relationship that can make or break a year: the partnership between the CEO and the Board chair.

The CEO–Board Chair Partnership Sets the Tone

When this relationship is built on trust, clarity, and shared purpose, the organization moves forward with confidence and speed. When it isn’t, even the smartest strategies can stall.

Effective governance is not about micromanaging or blurring roles. It’s about bringing different perspectives together, defining clear responsibilities, and guiding the organization toward its mission and long-term impact. The alignment of leadership and governance is what transforms ideas into results.

That’s why stepping back from the day-to-day to focus on strategy and collaboration is so critical.

Building Alignment at the CSAE CEO Symposium

Each year, CSAE offers the in-person CEO Symposium, one of my favourite offerings from CSAE. A focused, practical, and highly interactive session where CEOs and executive directors come together with their Board chairs and chief volunteers for a productive, practical working session designed to build a shared foundation for a successful year.

Led by Glenn Tecker of Tecker International, the symposium equips leaders to:

    • Set annual priorities that align strategy, governance, and operations.
    • Strengthen CEO–Board chair collaboration for more effective decision-making.
    • Leverage policy and strategy as tools to guide and accelerate organizational impact.

    From Insight to Action

This isn’t theory. It’s applied, relevant, and rooted in the real challenges association leaders face every day.

At the symposium, clarity replaces uncertainty. Strategy drives action. And informed governance becomes a powerful engine for progress. When CEOs and Boards share a common understanding of their organization’s direction, the role of policy in decision-making, and how to support and challenge one another effectively, they create the conditions for meaningful, measurable impact.

Setting the Foundation for a Strong Year

Leadership sets direction. Governance ensures accountability and sustainability. When these forces are aligned at the start of the year, associations can navigate complexity, seize opportunity, and deliver lasting value to their members and communities.

For CEOs and executive directors – especially those working with new or evolving Board chairs – this is an opportunity worth prioritizing. A strong year doesn’t just happen. It is built deliberately, with intention and focus, from the very first day.
