• Finding Our Voice: Advocacy, Insight, and the Future of Associations

    by Tracy Folkes Hanson

Talk to almost any association leader today and you’ll hear a similar story: the last few years have pushed us to rethink nearly every aspect of our organizations.

    How we engage members.
    How we deliver learning.
    How we demonstrate value.

The resilience of the association sector has been extraordinary – and the opportunity in front of us is even greater.

The associations that will thrive in the years ahead will step forward as trusted voices and catalysts for progress within the communities they serve. Strengthening the collective voice of associations in Canada has never been more important.

We have always played a vital role in bringing professionals and industries together. Today, however, association influence extends far beyond networking and professional development. Associations are increasingly called upon to inform policy, shape conversations, and advocate for the communities they represent.

    Creating Space for Advocacy

That’s why we’re excited to introduce Advocacy Hour, in partnership with First Lake Solutions – a new CSAE initiative designed to create space for meaningful discussion around the issues affecting associations and the sectors they serve.

Advocacy doesn’t always begin with a large campaign or a formal government submission. Often, it starts with sharing insights, identifying common challenges, and learning from one another. Advocacy Hour is intended to be a place where association professionals can explore how we collectively strengthen our voice and impact on the issues that matter most.

    Data-Informed Decisions

Another critical part of advancing the association sector is ensuring we have the insight and data needed to make informed decisions.

In 2024, CSAE released its first Membership Trends report, offering a valuable snapshot of how associations across Canada operate and where opportunities for growth lie. The response from our community was clear: association leaders want more data, more context, and more opportunities to learn from one another.

Building on that momentum, CSAE will soon launch a Membership Trends pulse survey. The report back to members will ultimately provide deeper insights into how associations are navigating membership growth, engagement, retention, and value in a rapidly changing landscape.

While membership has always been the foundation of associations, expectations are evolving. Today’s professionals are looking for personalized value, meaningful connections, and clear evidence that their association is advocating on their behalf.

Understanding these trends will help all of us make better decisions about how we serve our communities.

    Stronger Together

One of the greatest strengths of the association sector is its collaborative spirit. While our organizations serve different professions and industries, we are united by a shared purpose: helping people and communities thrive.

When we share knowledge, amplify each other’s voices, and advocate collectively, we strengthen not only our individual organizations but the entire sector.

At CSAE, our role is to support that leadership by creating spaces for conversation, providing meaningful insights, and championing the impact of associations across Canada.

The future of associations will be shaped by the collective leadership of those who believe in the power of community, collaboration, and purpose. That’s a conversation worth continuing.
