• The ROI of Belonging: Beyond the Member Portal

As a new fiscal begins at CSAE, I find myself reflecting on the energy and connection that defined our recent Western Summit in Winnipeg. It was, by design, a more intimate gathering. What stood out, however, wasn’t the size of the room. It was the depth of conversation, the authenticity of the connections, and the unmistakable sense that everyone there felt part of something meaningful. In the moments between sessions, over shared stories, and in the quiet affirmations of common purpose you could see the value of association membership and what it truly represents at its best: belonging.

    Redefining the Metrics of Success

As CEOs, we are conditioned to measure value in tangible terms: growth, retention, revenue, engagement metrics. These indicators matter, and they help guide smart decision-making. They don’t, however, always capture the full picture of why members stay, contribute, and advocate on behalf of our organizations.

At CSAE, we’ve long understood that membership is not defined by access to a portal, a library of resources, or even a calendar of events. Those are important features, not the outcome. The true value of membership lies in how people feel when they are part of something larger than themselves. It’s about connection, shared purpose, and the collective energy that emerges when individuals come together to advance their own professions and society as a whole.

    Purpose-Driven Community Building

Our mission, which includes creating opportunities for community building, sits at the heart of this philosophy. Associations are uniquely positioned to connect people and purpose in ways few other organizations can. They convene individuals across sectors, geographies, and perspectives, aligning them around common goals and challenges. And while those connections may begin in places like Winnipeg or through digital spaces, it’s not the format that defines their impact, it is the shared purpose behind them. In doing so, associations create environments where ideas flourish, collaborations spark, and leadership evolves.

This spirit of connection is something we’re intentionally nurturing at CSAE throughout Member May. This is a time when we create even more space for members to come together, share experiences, and strengthen the relationships that make our community so impactful.

    From Participation to Advocacy

Belonging drives engagement in a way that no platform ever could. When members feel seen, heard, and valued, they don’t just participate, they contribute. They mentor. They volunteer. They advocate. They become ambassadors not because they are asked to, but because they believe in the community they are part of.

Belonging drives engagement in a way that no platform ever could.

    Empowering Global Transformation

CSAE’s vision to empower associations to transform the world is rooted in the idea that collective action drives meaningful change. When individuals feel connected to a purpose and to one another, their ability to influence outcomes expands exponentially. Associations become catalysts for innovation, inclusion, and progress.

This is the kind of return that doesn’t always show up in a quarterly report. It is felt in every meaningful interaction, every partnership formed, and every initiative that moves our communities forward.

As leaders, our role is to cultivate this sense of belonging intentionally. It requires us to look beyond transactions and toward relationships. To design experiences that foster connection, not just consumption. And to continually ask ourselves: are we creating spaces where people truly feel they belong?

Because when we do, the results speak for themselves.

The ROI of belonging is not just stronger membership – it is stronger communities, stronger leadership, and ultimately, a stronger society.
