The Real Value of CSAE Membership: A 20 Year Journey
I joined the Canadian Society of Association Executives in my early 20s.
I had just been promoted to Manager, Membership at the Life Underwriters Association of Canada, now Advocis, a leading insurance and financial services association. I was proud of the promotion. I was also very aware that I had never formally learned membership marketing, value proposition design, community building, operations, or non dues revenue generation.
They simply did not teach those things in school.
I needed somewhere to turn to be good at my job.
Little did I know CSAE would help shape a career I could never have imagined.
Over the past two+ decades, CSAE has been a source of learning, perspective, and professional momentum as I navigated complexity, change, and rising expectations from members, leaders, and boards.
Today, I have the privilege of supporting multiple associations through fractional leadership, advisory work, speaking, and training membership teams on lifecycle strategy. Membership marketing has always been my calling. CSAE gave me the knowledge, relationships, and confidence to build a career around it.
Here is what that journey has taught me.
1. A Strong Community of Association Leaders
Member Outcome: Better judgment and less isolation
Association leadership often means making decisions without perfect answers. CSAE connected me with peers who understood governance pressures, member expectations, volunteer dynamics, and limited resources. That community reduced isolation and strengthened my judgment when I needed perspective most.
2. The CAE and Lifelong Learning
Member Outcome: Confidence and expanded perspective
The Certified Association Executive designation is widely recognized as the gold standard for association leadership in Canada. Many respected leaders have pursued it and gone on to lead organizations as CEOs and Executive Directors.
My path was different.
My calling has always been membership marketing. While I did not pursue the full CAE designation, I intentionally completed targeted courses that strengthened my understanding of governance, strategy, and membership. That learning broadened my perspective and made me better at building strong member value propositions and sustainable growth systems.
CSAE supports both broad leadership development and deep specialization. I chose to specialize, and that focus shaped my career.
3. Events That Support Learning and Reflection
Member Outcome: Clearer thinking and renewed focus
CSAE conferences, summits, webinars, and roundtables gave me something I did not always create for myself, space to think. Time away from daily demands to learn and connect sharpened my priorities and clarified my next move as a membership leader.
4. Governance Education and Resources
Member Outcome: Stronger board relationships and strategic direction
Working effectively with boards is a skill that develops over time. CSAE resources helped me better understand roles, manage risk, and navigate complex board dynamics. That knowledge continues to influence how I advise organizations today.
5. Volunteer Opportunities Across the Sector
Member Outcome: Leadership development and connection
Volunteering with CSAE stretched me beyond my own organization. It expanded my network across Canada and allowed me to contribute to strengthening the sector. Those experiences built relationships and leadership skills that continue to shape my work.
6. Research and Practical Resources
Member Outcome: Better informed decisions
Evidence based leadership matters. CSAE research on compensation, membership trends, and emerging issues such as AI supported smarter board conversations and better planning. It gave me confidence that my decisions were grounded in data.
7. A Responsive and Committed CSAE Team
Member Outcome: Easier navigation and faster support
CSAE’s staff have consistently been accessible, knowledgeable, and committed to helping members find the right programs and opportunities. That support reduces friction and increases the return on membership.
8. Awards and Recognition
Member Outcome: Public recognition and professional distinction
Recognition reinforces that the work association leaders do matters. CSAE’s Awards and Recognition Program spotlights excellence across the Canadian association community and raises the standard across the sector.
I was fortunate to be honoured with the Donna Mary Shaw Award recognizing emerging leadership early in my career. That recognition gave me confidence at a formative stage and encouraged me to continue developing my craft while supporting associations across the country.
9. Access to Experienced Business Members
Member Outcome: Smarter partnerships and revenue support
CSAE business members understand how associations operate. Over the years, I have learned from and partnered with professionals in membership growth, non dues revenue, operations, research, and technology. Those relationships influence how I now help associations strengthen their membership lifecycles.
10. A Sense of Belonging and Shared Purpose
Member Outcome: Professional resilience and fulfillment
Perhaps most importantly, CSAE created a sense of belonging. Being part of a professional community that understands association work builds resilience and reinforces a shared commitment to serving members and strengthening the sector.
Closing Reflection
CSAE delivers its greatest value when leaders participate and engage.
For me, it became the foundation of a career I never could have scripted in my early 20s. It helped me grow from a young membership manager searching for answers into someone who now supports associations across Canada in strengthening their membership lifecycle strategy.
I am grateful for the learning and the opportunities. But most of all, I am grateful for the people. Because in the end, the real value of CSAE is the community.
