• Leadership Through COVID-19: A Discussion With Gemma Beierback, CAE

Associations Connect Podcast – Episode 3

How do leaders face challenges — and maintain hope in the face of adversity? Get some insights as Gemma Beierback, CAE, CEO of the Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board (CCEB) shares her thoughts on the pandemic’s early challenges and how she conquered her biggest hurdle as a leader during this difficult time.

    Plus, you’ll learn about:

    • The tools CCEB used to stay connected and the weekly “COVID Challenge” it initiated to keep spirits up.
    • Why Beierback thinks it’s OK that the lines between operational and governance issues may be a bit blurred during the pandemic – the priority is “all hands on deck” right now in these uncharted waters.
    • How to focus on making the best decisions you can using the best information you have at hand.

Finally, Beierback offers these tips for associations moving toward a hopeful future:

    • Communicate with care: The association space is so important right now – it has emerged as a reliable source for pertinent, specific information. Take care to communicate with your members often and align those communications to reflect your own unique culture. I believe there will be a resurgence in association memberships post-pandemic.
    • Be there to provide support: As an association leader, my most important function right now is to support my board and my staff. In fact, I’m willing to say that creating and supporting resilient teams will be the learnings coming out of this pandemic.
    • People matter most: My biggest challenge is keeping my team culturally alive. How can we still be “us” in this world where we don’t actually see each other? I’m focused on that right now.
